Community Minute: Veterans Assistance League

Today, we’re talking about the people who help make our community a better place for our veterans to live.

Jeremy Marks recently sat down with Wayne Pearson from the Cameron Veterans Assistance League (VAL). While their official name is the Assistance League, Jeremy has a different title for them: The Justice League.

Based in Cameron, Missouri, this 100% volunteer-run nonprofit has a singular, powerful mission to enhance and improve the quality of life for the veterans living at the Missouri Veterans Home.

Bridging the Gap

Since its establishment in 2000, VAL has stepped in to fill the “gap.” As Wayne explains, there is too often a space between what the government provides and what a veteran actually needs to feel at home.

Whether it’s bringing the Easter Bunny in for a visit, organizing social entertainment, or providing therapeutic games, the League ensures that life at the home is filled with joy and dignity. One of their most important contributions? Over the last 25 years, they’ve purchased 12 wheelchair-accessible vans to ensure veterans can safely get to specialist appointments in Kansas City or attend community events.

Mark Your Calendars: The Patriot Ride

The League relies on the good will found in our local Missouri and Kansas communities to fund these life changing efforts. Their biggest event of the year is just around the corner:

  • What: The Patriot Ride (UTV/4-Wheeler 30-mile ride)
  • When: April 25, 2026
  • Where: Starting at the Veterans Home in Cameron, MO

This event brings people from all over the region to meet the veterans before heading out on a ride that raises resources and enthusiasm for the cause.

How You Can Help

Wayne was clear: every cent of donated funds raised go directly into the hands of veterans. Whether you are an individual who can give $25 or a business looking to sponsor a major event, your contribution stays local. Click here to learn more, volunteer or make a donation.

“Right now, our veterans need us at the highest level,” Jeremy told us. “Go out, make a change in your community.”
Let’s show our veterans that their neighbors in Missouri and Kansas have their backs.
