As mortgage brokers, we know that housing is about more than just four walls. It’s about the stability required to dream.

In our April Community Minute, Jeremy Marks sat down with Rosana Polanco, Co-Founder of Embrace Your Shine (EYS). While the conversation focused on their upcoming campus, the data behind their mission reveals a hidden crisis in our own backyard.

The Staggering Reality in Kansas City

We often think of youth homelessness as something that happens somewhere else, but the numbers tell a different story:

  • 3,175 students in the KC Metro area are identified as homeless.
  • 1,241 of those students are in our KC Public Schools.
  • 46% of UMKC students face housing and food insecurity.

Rosana calls these young people the “unseen hustlers.” They’re students showing up to class, studying, and working while carrying the heavy burden of survival mode.

More Than a Roof: The Missing Link

Safe housing is the first step, but Rosana and Co-Founder Gary Henke realized that housing alone isn’t enough to break the cycle. The root cause of long-term success isn’t just a trade or a degree. It’s the mindset.

“Toxic stress and housing instability create internal barriers like self-doubt and hopelessness,” Rosana explained. To solve this, EYS is launching Embrace Life, a 20-week personal development bootcamp.

While other programs teach the how (the trade or the job), Embrace Your Shine teaches the why and the who. It’s a holistic approach designed to help young adults shift out of survival mode and into a mindset of self-belief.

What’s Next: The Embrace Life Campus

The vision is moving fast. With land already donated and pre-development complete, the Embrace Life Campus is set to break ground this fall on its first six cottages.

These buildings will stand as a roadmap. By removing the trade-off between survival and success, EYS ensures that these rising leaders are equipped to redefine their futures.

Founded on Lived Experience

Rosana founded Embrace Your Shine after facing her own housing insecurity firsthand. She decided to build the support system she wished she’d had. Joined by Gary, whose background in commercial construction and small business development provides the technical backbone of the project, they are reimagining how Kansas City supports its most capable yet overlooked youth.

How You Can Help

Embrace Your Shine needs your support to finish the mission. EYS is currently in a capital campaign to complete the construction of the first six cottages on the campus.

  • Financial Support: Help fund the literal foundation of a young person’s future.
  • Spread the Word: Share the Community Minute video to help these invisible students feel seen.
  • Sign Up: Explore volunteer opportunities to mentor or assist the campus development.
