What is Bike Walk KC?
BikeWalkKC is a nonprofit organization working to make Greater Kansas City a safer, healthier, and more accessible place for people to walk, bike, live, work, and play. Their mission is to put people at the center of streets and public spaces while fostering a culture of active living.
They advance this mission through advocacy, education, community planning, and their bike share program. BikeWalkKC’s youth education programs, such as BLAST (Bicycle Lesson And Safety Training), teach bike skills and safety to kids, while adult classes like Confident City Cycling help riders of all levels feel more comfortable navigating city streets. On a broader scale, the organization partners with communities to design safer streets and better walking and biking networks.
BikeWalkKC also operates RideKC Bike, the region’s bike share system, giving residents and visitors an affordable, convenient, and sustainable transportation option.
40% of Children don’t know how to ride a bike.
Bike Walk KC educates 7,000 kids a year at different Elementary and High Schools in the KC area.
Bike Walk KC Youth Education
Bike Walk KC serves dozens of schools and thousands of kids every year, making a direct impact on the health and happiness of our youth that extends to our entire community. Kids become safer, healthier, more confident, and more engaged in the world around them.
BLAST is an innovative and proven school-based program teaches elementary school students the skills and knowledge required for safe and effective cycling.
BLAST is a primer for students to gain an understanding of how to safely operate a bicycle in a variety of situations. The class aims to produce cyclists who ride safely and skillfully.
By inviting BLAST into the classroom, PE teachers are providing their students with a formal education on an important topic and helping to create an educational culture that values cycling as a basic life skill.
