Hello Community!

No Kid Hungry is a national campaign run by Share Our Strength, a nonprofit working to solve problems of hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world. The mission of No Kid Hungry is in their name but it is not an easy feat. They have made extraordinary progress for kids and families but the job is far from over and No Kid Hungry remains committed to their promise- they won’t be done until every single child in America has the food they need to grow up healthy and strong.

Every day, in every community, a child goes hungry. It is estimated that 13 million children live in “food insecure” homes. The term food insecure means that a household does not have enough food for every family member to lead a healthy life. For More comprehensive understanding on food and secure homes, no kid hungry recommends visiting the USDA’s annual report on Household Food Security in the United States. Federal nutrition programs are one way that families make it through. No Kid Hungry supports these programs and focuses their efforts on the programs that they know will make the most impact for hungry kids. Some of these programs include, The School Breakfast Program, National Summer Meals Program and Afterschool Meals Program.

The problem is not the lack of food in the United States, it is the lack of access. That is where No Kid Hungry comes in. They support and provide school breakfasts and after school meals to kids that would miss those meals otherwise. With that in mind, you can imagine that summer is an incredibly hard season for families in need. No Kid Hungry provides a free texting service that connects families to community centers or schools that provide free summer meals programs. They also work with food trucks to deliver meals to rural communities and run national campaigns to raise awareness on childhood hunger during the summer.

Lastly, No Kid Hungry works to make impacting change through nutrition education. They offer free classes and apps that educate people on cooking and grocery shopping with your health in mind. They are also committed to research and changing policies to make lasting changes for the entire community though creating new programs to find more ways to feed kids. They also advocate for children by working with elected officials and government agencies to improve programs that kids rely on for food.

With all this in mind, how can we help No Kid Hungry in their efforts to end childhood hunger? You can make a financial donation to No Kid Hungry to support their work. You can come out and purchase baked goods at the No Kid Hungry Bake Sale on October 30th.  It’s being held in the parking lot at 6336 Brookside Plaza, KC MO from 9am to 1pm.  There are many other ways to support No Kid Hungry from fundraising, attending their events, contacting elected officials, and engaging with youth.
