Hello Community!
Kansas City Pet Project is this month’s featured organization for Community Lending of America. They are a nonprofit animal shelter that operates out of Kansas City, Missouri. They care for over 10,000 pets a year and work with animal control to help minimize the number of homeless pets. They also work with the community on pet ownership education to increase pet retention.
KCPP was formed in 2011 when city officials elected them to take over the original shelter that was being run as a “catch and kill” pound. Euthanasia rates were 60-70% at that time for the overall animal population and as recently as 2008, only 38% of animals made it out alive. KCPP immediately implemented lifesaving programs even though they had very few resources. Their motto was, “Solutions, Not Excuses.” With that mindset, KCPP officially started operating the shelter on January 1, 2012, and has consistently maintained a live release rate of 90% each month. Euthanasia is only warranted when animals are too sick or too injured to have a good prognosis for quality of life or are a posed risk to the community. They achieved a “no-kill” status and are becoming the 3rd largest open-admission, no-kill shelter in the United States.
In just 7 years, they have gone from operating just one animal control facility to now having 13 different successful adoption centers across the city. They care for over 10,000 pets a year.
KC Pet Projects’ mission is to lead the way in “creating a compassionate, safe community for pets and people through progressive life-saving programs and services, community resources, and educational opportunities.” Their purpose is to provide shelter and service to the Kansas City area by placing pets in homes and providing resources to people with pets. They also help reunite pets with their owners. Their goal is to improve animal service in the Kansas City community.
